1940s red wool, mother-of-pearl buttons and suede elbow patches: this Pendleton
shirt jacket brings a little schoolgirl mischief to practical sportswear. The open
collar sits neatly over a knit, while the two generous patch pockets give the front
its easy, useful shape. Turn it around and the darker red suede elbow patches and
soft gathers beneath the back yoke become part of the appeal.

Pendleton’s wool shirts helped establish its reputation long before “shacket” became
a wardrobe category. The company introduced its first women’s collection in 1949,
including the enduring ’49er jacket, a design that brought shirt-like ease to women’s
outerwear. [Pendleton’s own history](https://www.pendleton-usa.com/blog/the-pendleton-49er-jacket/)
traces that move into women’s sportswear and the lasting popularity of the loose
jacket.

This red version has a smoother, finer-looking surface than a chunky wool coat.
The contrast comes from the slightly darker, matte elbow patches and the mother-
of-pearl buttons running down the front and fastening the cuffs. There’s enough
visual interest here to carry a very simple outfit.

### Condition

Excellent vintage condition.

### Styling

Modern size: M. Wear it as a light outer layer over a fine knit, or button it up
with high-waisted trousers. The blue layer in the photos is a lovely foil for the
red; chocolate corduroy, faded denim or a sharp little checked skirt would work
just as well. Add loafers and ribbed socks for a playful preppy finish, or tall
boots when you want a longer line.

Measurements are available as needed to confirm the fit. [Email us with sizing or layering questions](https://shopquirkla.com/contact-us/)
before ordering and we’ll help you work out the proportions.

Listing is for the Pendleton jacket only. The blue layer and other styling pieces
are not included.
