1940s/1950s Chinese Embroidered Silk Longline Jacket | Modern size: US S (4/6)

Cobalt blue cuffs and knotted frog fastenings give this 1940s/50s Chinese silk jacket a strong outline. Across the ivory ground, colorful hand embroidery brings together floral medallions, flowers and butterflies, framed by black floral borders. The long, straight cut and wide, shortened sleeves let those details take center stage, whether worn open over denim or fastened over a simple slip dress. Modern size US S (4/6); the photographed model wears a modern US 4/6. Very good vintage condition. Vintage and pre-owned, with slight discoloration to the pale fabric, offered in as-is condition.

Description

Cobalt blue gives this ivory silk jacket its edge. The cuffs, piping and knotted front fastenings pick up the blue in the embroidery, while black floral borders trace the neckline, opening and hem. Red, orange and blue flowers sit among circular medallions and butterfly motifs, with just as much to enjoy on the back as the front.

The long, straight cut gives the embroidery room to breathe. Wide, shortened sleeves fall away from the arms, and the standing collar provides a neat frame at the neck. A soft sheen in the ground fabric contrasts with the denser stitched decoration. The effect comes from the arrangement of color and texture, rather than a fitted waist or a complicated silhouette.

Chinese embroidery in a mid-century wardrobe

Estimated to date from the 1940s/50s, the jacket has close stylistic parallels with Chinese embroidered export robes of the 1930–1950 period: pale silk grounds, contrasting blue cuffs and borders, and knotted frog fastenings. Those decorative edges do more than finish the garment. They frame the embroidery and give a loose, straight shape its definition, without relying on a fitted waist.

Here, the black floral bands outline the opening and hem, while cobalt cuffs give the wide sleeves a strong finish. The repeated medallions spread the decoration across the body rather than concentrating it at the neckline. Worn open, the blue piping makes a long vertical line; fastened, the jacket reads as a more continuous embroidered surface. Both ways of wearing it make use of the original cut.

Fit & sizing

Recommended modern fit: US Small, approximately 4/6. The model pictured wears a modern US 4/6. The jacket has an easy straight shape and is shown over a fitted blue layer. Measurements are available as needed to confirm the fit, including room for your preferred layers.

Styling

Keep the long blue line of the photographed outfit, or try it over an ivory tank and dark straight-leg denim. For evening, a simple black slip dress gives the embroidery a clear backdrop. Small earrings and a compact bag leave the collar and cuffs in view; a bright red shoe can pick up the flowers without competing with them.

Condition

Excellent customer service!!! We walked by coincidentally or by fate after we had given up on finding a costume for a 1900s theme party. We told Melynda (owner/stylist) our story and she quickly dived into finding us something fabulous to wear. My friend and I turned out to be the best dressed at the party. What I loved the most from shopping at Quirk was Melynda's passion for her work as a costumer designer and stylist. Her willingness to help us out is exactly what you expect from any service driven industry. Will definitely be back because the clothes is vintage and original and Melynda is awesome! Thanks again Quirk!

I volunteered at Quirk all afternoon today, and there is so much love and support alive in that space. They are overwhelmed with so many incredible donations and every single thing is being sorted and placed directly into the free shop where fire victims can come shop and get what they need. All items are the same quality you would find in a thrift store like Buffalo Exchange. There were volunteers helping people find clothing items that fit and served their needs while they’re grappling with the loss of their homes and belongings. There are so many ways fire victims need support and this is one of them! Thank you Quirk and the other amazing organization and businesses stepping up to help our community!

I was so happy to finally find a store in the heart of Dtla that sells true vintage clothing and accessories! It gets better- the owner, Melynda is a stylist/ costume designer who gave me style advice on a whim. Prices are reasonable and there’s even a $20 rack! Total hidden gem. Skip Zara. Check it out Quirk.

I've been coming to Quirk for years now. Some of my favorite pieces have come from her shop and I always get compliments. It's the perfect place to get something unique that not everyone has. Top quality items. One of my first pieces I bought from her is a vintage Armani blazer that has become a regular staple piece for me. Still in my rotation years later :) The shopping experience itself is always a treat (coming from someone who doesn't like shopping). Melynda is super welcoming and helpful if you're looking for something in particular. If she doesn't have it, it's likely she will soon, as she's regularly getting new inventory. Also, be sure to check out her shopping events!

I love this boutique! It's clear the owner Melynda has thoughtfully hand-picked and carefully curated an amazing collection of designer vintage and secondhand pieces. She has a fantastic selection of designer shoes and purses, and everything is in A+ condition or is like new! Melynda herself is super personable and always happy to help you find befitting pieces. There's also a superb selection of men's clothes and she has her own original designs for sale as well! So far I've bought two pairs of velvet gloves from her in-house label and I LOVE them! I get tons of compliments whenever I wear them. The designs are so unique, and the quality and construction are top notch. She's even making me a custom pair of pants using the same fabric as the gloves so I can have a matching set to wear to the Dreamstate Festival later this year! Plus there's a $20 sale rack with incredible finds. I highly recommend Quirk if you're looking for unique pieces that are in great condition and well priced, and super customer service 🤗

Melynda totally saved the day! She came on a magical unicorn and brought me my dress! I was searching for a dress for a wedding that went with their Great Gatsby theme and was totally not sure where to begin and what to wear. She helped me find a necklace and a dress here at the shop that was absolutely perfect! I got a gold and gunmetal tassel necklace and a robin egg's blue lace Tracy Reese dress. She was even kind enough to alter the shoulders for me since the wedding was the day of! They even had a funny wedding card that for the bride and groom! Mission accomplished, now just have to get a scarf or headpiece for my head to complete the theme and Melynda gave me some tips!! Will be back for next time when I need her expertise. They have an always shifting collection of curated vintage and new clothing. Love Quirk LA!

Went by on a Saturday with my daughter. Melynda was awesome and helpful, as always. We both found things we needed. What I appreciate about Melynda is the personal service and how she honestly cares about if something is "right" for you or not. She actually mended something I had just bought right on the spot (wouldn't let it leave with an almost loose button)! Appreciate her sense of style and will defiantly be headed back.

Taking in donations from everyone kindly donating including myself gathering toiletries and rolling racks with the help from the people in my home town Santa Barbara! She created a Free shopping boutique with very stylish clothes , shoes, handbags and also stuff for kids! Also added in Hair and facial services so people can feel good during these trying times!
