Description
This black fit-and-flare dress has a slightly wicked side. Narrow, twisted straps bridge a deep front opening, balancing the simple sleeveless bodice and flared skirt. A broad waist panel and front pleat give the silhouette its shape. At the back, a rounded neckline and center zipper keep the finish clean.
The fitted-waist, fuller-skirt proportion recalls the silhouette popularized by Dior’s 1947 New Look and carried into 1950s dressing. Here, the open, strappy front changes the mood considerably. The effect is less demure afternoon dress, more something to wear when dinner might turn into dancing.
Black makes the construction easy to appreciate: the horizontal lines at the neckline, the broad band at the waist and the skirt opening out below it. A necklace could interrupt that arrangement, so we would give the neckline room and choose earrings instead. The back is quieter, with its higher, rounded edge balancing the exposure at the front.
Change the company it keeps
Try sculptural earrings and a bright little bag for dinner, or add a cropped cardigan and pointed flats for a softer look. A short cardigan keeps the waist in view; a longer one worn open gives the full skirt a looser frame.
A slim turtleneck underneath changes the dress again. Ivory makes the neckline detail stand out, while black keeps the layers subtle. Add opaque tights and ankle boots when the weather cools. The bow and jewelry in the photographs are styling accessories and are not included.
