Description
A long black jacket with a little ceremony to it. Contrasting cable-style trim follows the front edges and curves around the hem of this Chaus blazer, drawing a continuous line against the dark fabric. Broad shoulders, long sleeves and low front pockets give it presence; the collarless neckline keeps that decorative border in view.
Chaus made its name in American career and casual sportswear, selling jackets, trousers, skirts and tops as both coordinated groups and individual separates. The New York company dates to 1975. This jacket, estimated to be from the 1990s, is a lovely example of why those separates remain useful: it has enough detail to carry an outfit, without needing the matching trousers to make sense.
The raised, twisted trim does the work that a print or contrasting lapel might otherwise do. Seen against the plain body, it gives the jacket a slightly ceremonial feeling, but the open styling and generous length keep it approachable. In our photographs, a close-fitting blue layer runs between the two trimmed edges, making the outline especially clear.
Take it out of the office
Try it over a silk camisole and fluid black trousers for dinner, with a small pair of earrings and a soft clutch. For daytime, a cream ribbed top and tobacco-colored trousers would warm up the black. Cropped trousers and a low loafer leave a little ankle showing beneath the longer jacket, so the outfit feels light rather than covered up.
A short, simple dress also works well under this length. Keep its neckline quiet and let the trim frame it, or add a fine striped layer if you like a little pattern against pattern. This listing is for the jacket only; the blue outfit is used for styling.
