Description
A cream skirt can do considerably more than play it safe. This Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche piece has a defined waistband, a straight knee-length cut and a discreet side zip with a button. The uncluttered shape makes the proportions of the rest of an outfit more noticeable: a cropped tee, a generous sleeve or a sharp little jacket will each give it a different character.
The Rive Gauche connection
Yves Saint Laurent opened his first Rive Gauche boutique in Paris in September 1966. The collection was conceived as ready-to-wear in its own right, rather than a less expensive copy of his couture. That distinction is part of the label’s appeal: clothes designed to enter a wardrobe and be worn, combined and made personal.
Here, the simple line and pale color offer plenty of room for that kind of dressing. Keep the waist visible with a tucked shirt, or let a soft blouse fall a little over the waistband. The straight skirt provides a useful counterpoint to volume above it.
A few ways to wear it
Our styling pairs it with a cropped white tee. Add loafers and a bright bag for an easy daytime outfit, or swap in a printed blouse and a low heel for dinner. Cream also makes a lovely background for saturated red, cobalt or a slightly acidic green.
If you prefer a quieter palette, try a chocolate knit and gold earrings. Texture can supply the contrast: a fuzzy sweater against the skirt’s clean outline, or a crisp shirt with the cuffs turned back. You needn’t dress the whole outfit around its label.
Fit and ordering
Garment measurements are available as needed to confirm the waist, hips and length. Email us for help choosing the fit, or for a closer look at the fabric and condition before ordering. We’re happy to talk through how you would like to wear it.
