A little volume makes a big difference. This cropped black jacket has a broad brown collar, two rows of dark buttons and a roomy shape that falls away from the body. The lustrous, plush-looking surface catches the light across the sleeves and back, giving the black more depth than a flat woven fabric.
The proportions are the point: a short body, generous sleeves and a collar wide enough to frame the face. Loose jackets worn over narrow skirts were part of the mid-century wardrobe; the V&A’s collection includes an example of that silhouette from 1950. Here, that contrast of volume and a slimmer lower half offers an easy starting point for getting dressed.
