Description
A polo with considerably more personality than the uniform version. Orange and gold shapes overlap a dark ground on this Alex Colman top, with small white squares breaking up the pattern. A pointed collar and button placket frame the print; short sleeves keep the familiar polo shape from getting lost in all that geometry.
Print was central to Alex Colman’s identity. The family-run California sportswear company developed exclusive patterns under longtime designer Blanche Lefton, then paired them with coordinating separates. In a 2008 interview, former president Robert Colman described working with Japanese mills on those prints and building much of the business around clothes that could be worn together.
That history makes a good styling cue for this piece. You can borrow that approach without a matching set: choose one color from the print and give it a plain companion. The white squares keep the orange and gold from looking too heavy, so a pale bottom works particularly well.
Make your own coordinates
Try cream trousers and loafers, or borrow our pale-skirt and bright-bag combination. An orange bag picks up the print without requiring orange shoes as well. For a different balance, try dark straight-leg denim with a slim belt and a gold-toned earring.
The short sleeves also make it an easy layer under a plain jacket, with the collar left showing. A chocolate-brown blazer would keep the colors warm; ivory would make the print feel lighter. Leave the jacket open so the pattern has room to show.
