1970s Mustard Patchwork Knit Cardigan Jacket, Men’s S/M

An estimated 1970s mustard knit cardigan jacket with mixed-texture checkerboard panels, a pointed collar, covered buttons, ribbed cuffs, and a cropped blouson-style hem. Tonal ochre, camel, and golden-yellow squares give the front a dimensional patchwork effect while the solid knit back keeps the shape clean. Best fits a modern men’s S/M and is shown on Jayden with a close, easy fit through the torso.

Description

A warm-toned vintage cardigan jacket that sits somewhere between knitwear, sportswear, and wearable textile design. The mustard body is framed by checkerboard patchwork panels in ochre, camel, and golden yellow, creating a rich tonal surface without relying on a loud print.

The construction includes a pointed knit collar, covered button front, long sleeves with ribbed cuffs, and a ribbed blouson hem. The solid knit sleeves and back balance the more decorative front, giving the jacket a clean silhouette from every angle.

On Jayden, it fits neatly through the shoulders and torso with enough room for a fine-gauge sweater or T-shirt underneath. The waist-length shape works particularly well with high-rise trousers, wide-leg denim, or a longer shirttail layered underneath.

Fit Notes

Estimated to best fit a modern men’s S/M, depending on the desired ease.

On Jayden, the shoulder line sits correctly and the body fits close without pulling across the chest or button placket. The sleeves finish around the wrist, and the ribbed hem sits at the upper hip. A modern men’s Small should receive a slightly easier fit, while a Medium should expect a trimmer vintage silhouette.

The jacket may also work for a unisex modern M/L customer seeking a shorter, more fitted proportion, but the primary merchandising category should remain men’s S/M.

Condition

Good vintage condition.

The jacket remains structurally wearable and the mustard knit retains strong, even color overall. Visible age and use include scattered marks and spotting across several of the lighter patchwork squares, tonal variation within the mixed-texture panels, light surface wear, soft creasing, and minor wear around the buttonholes and covered buttons.

No major holes, large tears, missing buttons, or significant structural damage are visible in the supplied photographs. The visible marks are part of the jacket’s current presentation and are reflected in the price.

Styling Notes

Wear it buttoned with high-rise pleated trousers or wide-leg denim, or leave it open over a fitted black tank or fine-gauge turtleneck. The mustard palette also works well with chocolate brown, cream, deep indigo, olive, and burgundy.

The vintage Celine Macadam travel bag shown in the styled photographs is separate inventory and is not included with the jacket.

Curation Note

Each Quirk piece is hand selected by our team for quality, construction, styling potential, and point of view.

I finally walked in after walking by for years when I heard they were in need for volunteers for their donation drive. I'm ashamed I haven't found this store before. The owner is fantastic, she hopped out of a hospital bed and straight to setting up this push to help people. The store, as it's known, on the fourth floor feels like you are thriving with some of the most upbeat staff to aid you find everything you need for woman's clothing, toiletries, and undergarments. On the second is where you can find an almost equal amount of men's, rare to have this ratio in any department store. Kids all the way down to infants, with diapers, and toys. Here you can see volunteers going from room to room sorting through, sizing, and cleaning up donations to stock both floors. Snacks, water, non-perishable food, and a welcome environment has made this a far distinction from digging through a pile of T-shirts on a folding table. My time volunteering here has been exhausting in the best way, the tiredness that comes with knowing you've done good, that your work and presence are valued. I'll continue to be here everyday I can until Melynda gets tired of me saying, "Happy ___day!" We're still here!

An absolute gem of a boutique, with a constant stream of unique vintage pieces! I was able to get the perfect dress, pumps, handbag, and hat for a formal tea at very short notice. The store is easy to access in the second floor of a fashion design building. The owner is a talented costume designer with a wealth of experience from film and more. Whether you go in with a decade-specific goal in mind, or are just looking for a special treasure, you will surely find something magical!!!

What a gem of a place! Everything I took home fit. The clothes were fabulous but Trent was so cool and cute, Carmen was so very helpful going out if her way for me and Allison helped my cousin hand pick his new wardrobe and not to mention she was gorgeous to boot! Thank you Quirk, Thanks for going above and beyond and for restoring my faith in humanity! Margo and Raul

I had a really good experience at Quirk. Its located in DTLA which is known to give you headaches with parking. Luckily there were several fairly priced garage options on the same block. The shop is located on the second floor of this cool, early 20th century style building. I love vintage buildings so I was hyped before I even stepped into Quirk. But once inside I was really digging the vibes. They have a really selection of vintage, modern clothes for women and men. With assistance of the curator, Melynda, I was able to grab a few items for an upcoming headshot session. I didn't have to break the bank as the items I purchased were from a $20 rack. I will def go again. I highly recommend checking it out.

Great vintage shop in Downtown! With all the new vintage stores popping up around LA these days, Quirk really stands out with having unique, high quality items that are personally curated by the owner, Melynda, who is also a professional stylist and costume designer. Most vintage shops these days are just filled with XXL 80s/90s shirts, and overpriced jeans. Quirk has one-of-a-kind items that have made me a return customer. Most recent purchases were a 1970s YSL handbag and kimono jacket that always get me compliments when I wear them out.

This is such a fabulous find! A true gem tucked away in DTLA!! I went looking for vintage men’s items to match a watch I was gifted, and Melynda helped me pick out the most beautiful suit. She’s amazing too - she has the most fun and quirky style, but also donates clothes to victims of the wildfires. She gave me a tour of “The People’s Free Boutique” and it’s laid out to make those who have lost everything feel like they are really shopping for high-end items rather than getting things for free. I will be back to support Quirk Vintage again!!
