Description
A grid of blue and silver-toned beadwork gives this black Stenay silk blouse a wonderfully graphic surface. Each square holds a smaller geometric motif, with diagonal lines crossing the vertical and horizontal rows. The scalloped hem and sleeve edges soften the precision of the pattern.
The decoration follows the whole shape of the top rather than stopping at a panel across the chest. A round neckline and short sleeves keep the cut simple, allowing the hand beading to read clearly against the black silk. At the lower edge, the points of the pattern meet the curved hem, a detail worth leaving untucked.
This is an evening blouse that does not need a matching evening outfit. The blue gives you something to pick up elsewhere, while the black ground makes it easy to work with pieces you already own. Choose a plain fabric underneath so the small geometric motifs remain distinct.
Play with proportion
The cream mini skirt in our photographs puts a clean block of color beneath the patterned hem. Wide ivory trousers would make the same contrast feel more fluid. Add a blue shoe if you want to pull out the beadwork, or keep to black flats and carry a small metallic bag.
For a less dressed-up outing, try it over indigo jeans with a cropped black jacket left open. The short sleeves make it easier to layer without losing the embellished neckline. A long, plain skirt offers another option for dinner, with the scallops resting over the waistband. This listing is for the blouse only.
