Description

A strong vintage McGregor safari-style jacket in rich brown cotton velvet with a soft plush finish and easy 1970s attitude. The color sits in a warm chocolate / tobacco brown, with the natural nap variation and light catching quality that makes cotton velvet so good in motion.

The jacket features a pointed collar, front button closure, chest flap pockets, lower flap pockets, long sleeves, and a fully lined interior. The silhouette lands somewhere between a shirt jacket, safari jacket, and casual blazer alternative: structured enough to dress up, but relaxed enough to wear open over a printed shirt or simple tee.

McGregor was a major name in mid-to-late 20th-century American sportswear, especially known for accessible casual menswear with strong everyday wearability. This piece has that same foundation, but the brown cotton velvet gives it a much more elevated, after-dark feel.

Marked size 42. Based on Dean’s measurements and the visible fit, this best fits a modern men’s M/L to L, approximately 42 chest, depending on desired fit. On Dean, it fits comfortably through the chest and body with a clean vintage jacket shape.

Shown styled with sunglasses, a red shirt, gray trousers, and a clutch. Listing is for the jacket only.

Fit Notes

Marked size 42. Estimated modern fit is men’s M/L to L, approximately 42 chest.

Shown on Dean, who is 6’2”, 170 lb, wears a men’s Medium shirt, 40L slim-fit suit, has a 40” chest, 36” sleeve, and 31/32” waist. On Dean, the jacket fits comfortably through the chest and body with a clean vintage jacket shape. Best for a modern men’s Medium/Large who wants an easy jacket fit, or a modern Large who prefers a neater vintage fit.

Because Dean is tall with a 36” sleeve, the sleeve and body length are useful references for taller wearers.

Condition

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The brown cotton velvet exterior presents strongly overall, with natural nap variation, light surface wear, and gentle creasing typical of vintage velvet. The interior lining shows visible age-related wear, including small holes, seam stress, and fraying near the inner underarm/lining area. The jacket remains wearable and visually strong, but the lining wear is part of the condition and is reflected in the grade. Please review photos carefully.

Styling Notes

Wear it over a red or printed shirt with pleated trousers for full 1970s energy, or style it more quietly with a white tee, black knit, faded denim, or cream trousers. It also works well with loafers, boots, high-top sneakers, or a simple tank underneath. The brown velvet pairs especially well with ivory, rust, red, denim blue, olive, camel, black, and gray.

Styling / Cross-Sell Note

Styled with sunglasses, a red shirt, gray trousers, sneakers, jewelry, and a clutch for shoot styling. Listing is for the jacket only unless otherwise stated.

Curation Note

Selected for its rich brown cotton velvet, classic McGregor sportswear label, 1970s safari-jacket shape, and excellent styling potential. It has the kind of vintage menswear personality that can read rock-and-roll, tailored, or softly louche depending on how it is worn.

Authenticity Note

Interior label reads McGregor, 100% cotton, Made in Korea, Dry Clean Only, and marked size 42. Era is estimated based on label design, fabrication, country of origin, pocket styling, button-front construction, and overall 1970s sportswear silhouette.

Size Chart

Vintage sizing varies greatly by brand, country, garment type, and time period. The marked vintage size may not reflect today’s sizing standards. Whenever possible, we provide both the original marked size and our estimated modern US size equivalent. This estimate is based on the item’s era, construction, fabric behavior, relevant size references, and how the piece fits on the model shown. We do not clip, pin, or artificially alter garments when photographing them. The model’s size, measurements, and visible fit are the best guides for understanding modern fit. Please review all photos, fit notes, and product details before purchasing.

One of the coolest places I’ve stumbled upon thus far. Unlike some other vintage stores where it feels like it’s full of marked-up Goodwill items, Melynda takes the time to research and select all the items she puts out in the store. When I stopped by, she even let me look through some items she hadn’t put out yet, and I found a really cool vintage Western button-up. The men’s section is not neglected either, full of some really cool shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, and other accessories. If you’re looking to find a unique piece in a friendly environment, this is the place for you.

This is such a fabulous find! A true gem tucked away in DTLA!! I went looking for vintage men’s items to match a watch I was gifted, and Melynda helped me pick out the most beautiful suit. She’s amazing too - she has the most fun and quirky style, but also donates clothes to victims of the wildfires. She gave me a tour of “The People’s Free Boutique” and it’s laid out to make those who have lost everything feel like they are really shopping for high-end items rather than getting things for free. I will be back to support Quirk Vintage again!!

Excellent customer service!!! We walked by coincidentally or by fate after we had given up on finding a costume for a 1900s theme party. We told Melynda (owner/stylist) our story and she quickly dived into finding us something fabulous to wear. My friend and I turned out to be the best dressed at the party. What I loved the most from shopping at Quirk was Melynda's passion for her work as a costumer designer and stylist. Her willingness to help us out is exactly what you expect from any service driven industry. Will definitely be back because the clothes is vintage and original and Melynda is awesome! Thanks again Quirk!

I appreciate what Quirk is doing and helping restoring the lives of those affected by the fires!!! It's always a humbling experience to give back to the community and receive services. Melinda (even tho' I'm so spelling her name wrong lol sorry) is always a cup of joy and so supportive. You are such a gem along with your team. I look forward to watching the free peoples boutique grow along with quirk. Thank you once again and words can never describe what an impact you have shown towards myself, family, friends and community.

Went by on a Saturday with my daughter. Melynda was awesome and helpful, as always. We both found things we needed. What I appreciate about Melynda is the personal service and how she honestly cares about if something is "right" for you or not. She actually mended something I had just bought right on the spot (wouldn't let it leave with an almost loose button)! Appreciate her sense of style and will defiantly be headed back.

I worked with Melynda on a professional photoshoot for my company and ever since then I have been going to her store. Such a great way to change up my style and find new unique items. I am a proud owner of a vintage Italian suit and have even rented a gown for a special event. Always looking for her insight when shopping there.

Great vintage shop in Downtown! With all the new vintage stores popping up around LA these days, Quirk really stands out with having unique, high quality items that are personally curated by the owner, Melynda, who is also a professional stylist and costume designer. Most vintage shops these days are just filled with XXL 80s/90s shirts, and overpriced jeans. Quirk has one-of-a-kind items that have made me a return customer. Most recent purchases were a 1970s YSL handbag and kimono jacket that always get me compliments when I wear them out.

The BEST vintage shop in LA!! The minute you walk in you are greeted by the owner and stylist, which is rare for a vintage shop, if you ask me! Melynda is absolutely wonderful and provides excellent customer service! Since she's a professional stylist she's extremely knowledgeable about fashion and helps you coordinate outfits together. She has a great assortment of women's and men's clothing, shoes and accessories. I try to visit the shop once every two weeks, you just can't beat the prices, it's cheaper than Wasteland! If you are looking for one of a kind vintage pieces from the 1960's to now, Quirk is your place to shop! They carry Theory, James Perse, APC, Prada, Burberry and many more! I highly recommend this vintage shop!!

I am such a shop-aholic at her store. I love her dresses and shoes. The owner always put a great story behind every outfit and whom she did her work. The owner, Melynda is AMAZING Stylist in the business. Her work is ABSOLUTELY amazing and her dog Prudence who comes into the store makes the vibe very loving and friendly. I pretty much spend my entire paycheck coming to this store. Very tempting and I always come out with the hottest looks at her store.

I was so happy to finally find a store in the heart of Dtla that sells true vintage clothing and accessories! It gets better- the owner, Melynda is a stylist/ costume designer who gave me style advice on a whim. Prices are reasonable and there’s even a $20 rack! Total hidden gem. Skip Zara. Check it out Quirk.
