1980s | Yves Saint Laurent Black Patent Velvet Bow Rhinestone-Buckle Pumps | Modern size: US 4.5/5

Glossy black patent, folded velvet bows and rhinestone buckles give these 1980s Yves Saint Laurent pumps the presence of jewelry. The tapered toe and sculpted mid-height heel keep the line slim, while gold-tone branded interiors and textured protective forefoot soles add distinctive details. Marked EU 35½, they fit a modern US 4.5/5 with a narrow to standard-narrow shape. Very good vintage condition includes light patent creasing, minor edge and heel scuffs, heel-tip wear and rubbing to the interiors. Wear them beneath tuxedo trousers or a column dress, or let the buckles dress up dark denim and a white shirt.

Description

Vintage Yves Saint Laurent pumps from the 1980s, likely the mid-to-late decade, combine sleek black patent leather with soft velvet bows and brilliant rectangular rhinestone buckles.

The glossy upper creates a clean, elongated line, while folded black velvet adds depth across the vamp. Each bow is centered beneath a substantial rectangular buckle framed in clear rhinestones, giving the shoes the effect of jewelry without overwhelming their refined proportions.

The silhouette features a tapered almond-to-pointed toe, low-cut vamp, and slim sculpted mid-height heel. Metallic gold-tone interiors carry the full Yves Saint Laurent name, while both outsoles are marked European size 35½.

Textured protective half soles have been added beneath the forefoot for traction and continued wear. The combination of patent leather, velvet, rhinestone ornamentation, and sharply refined evening proportions reflects the dressed-up glamour associated with 1980s footwear.

Wear them with black tuxedo trousers, a narrow cocktail dress, a velvet skirt, or dark cropped denim and a crisp white shirt. The buckles provide the jewelry, so the rest of the outfit can remain clean.

Fit Notes

Marked European size: 35½. Modern size: US 4.5/5.

The tapered toe, close pump construction, and narrow-looking heel cup may make the usable fit feel smaller than that of a contemporary rounded-toe shoe carrying the same European marking. These will likely work best for a narrow or standard-narrow foot, or for someone accustomed to a close vintage pump fit.

Approximate international equivalents are UK 2.5/3 and JP 22/22.5. These conversions are guidance rather than guaranteed equivalents because fit varies by maker, production period, last, width, and toe shape.

Condition

Very Good Vintage Condition.

The patent uppers retain a strong gloss, the velvet bows remain dimensional, and the rhinestone buckles appear complete in the photos. Visible wear includes light creasing and surface marks to the patent leather, minor edge and heel scuffing, wear to the heel tips, and expected fading, rubbing, and foot impressions to the metallic gold-tone interiors.

Textured protective half soles have been added beneath the forefoot and show light use. A small oval cobbler or protective-sole sticker remains on one outsole.

No major patent cracking, sole separation, collapsed heel, or visibly missing rhinestone is apparent in the photographs.

Styling Notes

Treat these as the jewelry in the outfit. Pair them with a black trouser suit, cigarette pants, a column dress, jewel-toned velvet, metallic brocade, or dark straight-leg denim with an oversized white shirt.

They are polished enough for evening dressing but distinctive enough to sharpen simple separates.

Curation Note

Each Quirk piece is hand selected by our team for quality, construction, styling potential, and point of view.

Quirk for Fire Vicitms has been such a special place for me. I have found wonderful clothes to get myself started after losing my home in Pacific Palisades. The boutique is clean, organized and the volunteers are so kind and helpful. Melinda who runs has become my friend and I have run into other friends who lost their homes and met many new ones. 5 stars plus another 5 stars

As an enthusiast of cool articles of clothing from from then to now and back again, I discovered a gem in dtla called Quirk! Co-owner Melynda always creates the best experience whenever I stop by...much like like visiting a friend and unlike some vintage shops there's always something new in rotation. Do yourself a favor folks and stop by!

Melynda totally saved the day! She came on a magical unicorn and brought me my dress! I was searching for a dress for a wedding that went with their Great Gatsby theme and was totally not sure where to begin and what to wear. She helped me find a necklace and a dress here at the shop that was absolutely perfect! I got a gold and gunmetal tassel necklace and a robin egg's blue lace Tracy Reese dress. She was even kind enough to alter the shoulders for me since the wedding was the day of! They even had a funny wedding card that for the bride and groom! Mission accomplished, now just have to get a scarf or headpiece for my head to complete the theme and Melynda gave me some tips!! Will be back for next time when I need her expertise. They have an always shifting collection of curated vintage and new clothing. Love Quirk LA!

I volunteered at Quirk all afternoon today, and there is so much love and support alive in that space. They are overwhelmed with so many incredible donations and every single thing is being sorted and placed directly into the free shop where fire victims can come shop and get what they need. All items are the same quality you would find in a thrift store like Buffalo Exchange. There were volunteers helping people find clothing items that fit and served their needs while they’re grappling with the loss of their homes and belongings. There are so many ways fire victims need support and this is one of them! Thank you Quirk and the other amazing organization and businesses stepping up to help our community!

5 stars for what they are doing for the community but not for my personal experience. They were listed on the wildfire Google sheet / website as one of the few places still accepting donations, so I brought all my unworn clothes over. The address on the website and online is not the correct one, so had to get back in my car and find new parking closer to the new location. Then I get inside and they said donations are by appointment only. 30 minute drive and a lot of parking hassle with nothing to show for it. Would be nice if they updated their donation status and location on the Google sheet. Annoying for me but glad they are helping those in need. The new location is in the photo.

I finally walked in after walking by for years when I heard they were in need for volunteers for their donation drive. I'm ashamed I haven't found this store before. The owner is fantastic, she hopped out of a hospital bed and straight to setting up this push to help people. The store, as it's known, on the fourth floor feels like you are thriving with some of the most upbeat staff to aid you find everything you need for woman's clothing, toiletries, and undergarments. On the second is where you can find an almost equal amount of men's, rare to have this ratio in any department store. Kids all the way down to infants, with diapers, and toys. Here you can see volunteers going from room to room sorting through, sizing, and cleaning up donations to stock both floors. Snacks, water, non-perishable food, and a welcome environment has made this a far distinction from digging through a pile of T-shirts on a folding table. My time volunteering here has been exhausting in the best way, the tiredness that comes with knowing you've done good, that your work and presence are valued. I'll continue to be here everyday I can until Melynda gets tired of me saying, "Happy ___day!" We're still here!

I cannot say enough glowing words about Quirk. It's the absolute best. I've come several times since 2020 and they never miss. Melynda is a top-tier curator. All her pieces feel hand-picked with thought, care, and a keen eye for taste and style. It's easy to find a great deal here: I've found a vintage Dior wallet at Quirk, as well as multiple outfits for red carpets, premieres, photoshoots, and day-to-day wear. She keeps prices super fair and reasonable while knowing her stuff when it comes to true vintage, designer, and quality. I always know I'm getting my money's worth. As a stylist, Melynda is a true treat and I highly recommend working with her. Whether it's working on a tight budget and creating 15-30 looks from vintage pieces, or an expanded budget that can pull from showrooms and designer pieces, or even creating a custom piece--Melynda knows how to meet the needs of every budget and occasion and go above and beyond. She puts in the work when it comes to event research and advocates for a client's personal taste. She has styled high-profile clients and costumed network television shows--it's hard to find someone who knows more about true vintage and eras than Melynda! As someone who loves vintage shopping, thrifting, and flea/artist/vintage markets, I'm always looking for vendors and stores, and Quirk is one of those special places where you can tell vintage is a real passion, not just a place to make a quick buck on a Tiktok trend (though you can definitely find super trendy pieces here too!). At Quirk, I'd say clothes are treated like found treasure looking for their forever home! I come back again and again because the pieces are fun and always changing. As a store owner, Melynda is friendly, knowledgable, and is great at offering styling advice for each customer's unique taste. She keeps such a positive shopping atmosphere in the store. I'll always keep returning!
