Description
Chartreuse makes a very good case against playing it safe. These Plein Sud pants pair that yellow-green shade with a high waist, two dark front buttons and a tapered leg. Fine ribbing adds texture without competing with the color, while front pockets and belt loops give the shape a practical finish.
Plein Sud is the label of designer Fayçal Amor, established in Paris in the 1980s. Amor’s work extended beyond his own collections: in the early 1990s, he provided production support for John Galliano’s move to Paris. It is an interesting piece of fashion history behind a name that may be less immediately familiar than some of its contemporaries.
Here, the appeal is wonderfully direct. The close-set texture gives the bright surface some depth, and the narrow ankle balances the high waist. Two dark buttons break up the color at the front. With trousers this vivid, the relationship between the waist, hem and whatever you put on top matters as much as the shade itself.
Ways to wear the color
The original styling pairs them with a cropped graphic tee and gold sandals, leaving the waistband visible. Take that idea into cooler weather with a fitted black knit and a short jacket, or try a crisp white shirt with the sleeves pushed up. A flash of cobalt or violet works beautifully against chartreuse if you feel like adding another color. For something gentler, try a fine ivory knit and chocolate-brown loafers.
